Shooting at Home

I have recently decided to take some of my own advice and shoot things in or around my home. There is lots to see when you look (thanks Yogi). I recently bought a Sony NEX 5N because I had read it is at least decent and it is very handy. I just leave it on a table and grab it whenever I see something I want to photograph. So here is some of what I am seeing at home.

Another Ramble

My buddy and I like to ramble at least once a week. This week's ramble was to Abbeville, SC and back. I thought the Abbeville square would be well-decked out but this year it was somewhat subdued. On the way home we found a farm with old out buildings and a pig. Most of the px were shot using a tripod. This helps me to slow down and really look. BTW, that does not mean that the px are really any better but have a chance of being better and definitely sharper.

A few days ago some of my friends and I went to an "antique farm" An older gentleman has been saving his old farm vehicles and their implements and now has an "antique farm". He is also an active musician as is his son. We got a chance to talk to him and wander around his studio and "farm". Here are some of my px of a wonderful place cared for by an excellent curator.

I and a friend of mine have been wandering around town and have found some interesting old metal industrial buildings (Quonset huts). The curves and surfaces are beautiful as are the colors. I have found them a pleasure to look at and work on.

I recently ran two separate speakers in my living (listening) room, Morrison Audio Model 17's and Linkwitz Orion's (current version). The tradeoffs are interesting. The Morrison speaker system is excellent within its frequency range. I have never heard clarity, timbre and space so naturally represented except in a good live performance space. The bass is somewhat light but again, very clear.

The Orions present a fuller bass and also represent space very well. Where they do not quite match the Morrison speaker is in ultimate clarity.

I think the clarity issue has to do with the # of drivers in the Orion (5 vs 2). Since 2 of the drivers are woofers, the fuller sound is accounted for.

After one takes a lot of pictures, you can pick out groups of images that seem to belong together. I rounded up a group of mannikins, statues, and weird presentations. In my mind they sort of go together.

Nantucket

Finally we get on board our cruise ship and motor to Nantucket. Nantucket was the primary whaling seaport during the height of American whaling. Herman Melville's "Moby Dick" describes whaling perfectly. The whalers were America's world explorers by virtue of sailing to find whales in the Pacific and Arctic seas after harvesting the local whales. Now Nantucket is history rich and beautiful with old buildings and extraordinary flowers, boats and a fine whaling museum.

Newport Harbor and Fort Adams State Park

Narragansett

Breakfast at the Crazy Burger in Narragansett and the walk preceding it had more opportunities for px than I could use and still get to breakfast. I also could not resist posting my night shot of the Narraganset nightlife strip.

A few weeks ago we went to Chris Abell's Custom Flute workshop in Asheville. He makes professional grade flutes (of the type his wife, the musician Kate Steinbeck uses). Chris explained the process, the differences of sound with different materials and the life of wood.

The workshop beckons to a day gone by when things were actually handcrafted with knowledge and TLC.

When it is too hot to out shooting, I like to amble through things I have shot in the past. Here are a few images I revisited. I shot the sky for reuse when I need clouds in an image. The leaves just had subtle colors. I frequently return to the Asheville, NC riverfront because the wall art is always changing. Finally, I love the jumble of the Alaskan fishing boats.

The Saturday AM Baseball Game

Y League baseball is fun to watch and over a period of time you can see the kids develop their skills. The young'uns still have a tendency to loose focus on the game but they are improving. The weather turned hot and there is no beer at Y games. I find the visuals surrounding the game interesting.

A Little of This and a Little of That

This will be sort of a grab bag of things. For the last several weeks I have been listening to music through a new pair of speakers built by Don Morrison of Morrison Audio. For the (probably) few audiophiles who read this blog I must say that the spaciousness, clarity and proper timbre of these speakers puts one in the concert hall. Three cheers for Don.

The images are totally unrelated to the above and maybe just slightly related to each other. I was bemused by the structural similarity between the wall painting and fading tulip. The picture of the family presenting the lobster on the platter and the doll heads also seemed to relate. Enough talk.

Greenfield Village

Because I am having so much fun shooting, I an falling behind in my blogging. Our visit to Greenfield Village, part of the Henry Ford collection probably represents Ford's nostalgia for an America that existed mainly in his mind. I find his representation much more authentic than Disney's. We were given a fiber tour by a friend of Alice's and his wife, a bit of which you'll see. At some later date I'll blog out some more of the village.

Beside's being an inventor, entrepreneur and industrialist, he was an avid collector of almost everything. His museum is full of the things which interested him the most, some of which I will share. The museum and Dearborn Village are lucky to have such a talented staff both paid and volunteer to show, curate and preserve the collection. For me the collection is about American industry and its greatness as well as Ford's industrial and merchandizing foresight.

Well while you do not have to leave home to make pictures, sometimes the itch to travel must be scratched. This group gets from Highway 25 in Greenville County to Nashville. Shooting through the windshield is always interesting because it is one that is a common vantage point for me. As a short aside, my nearby filed of flowers has been mown down by the county. There is now a welcoming no trespassing sign. I think Alice has posted that.

Shots at state rest areas always have some neat things to see.

Vacation Close to Home

It is fun but not necessary to travel long distances to see great stuff. There is a vacant lot in our neighborhood that blooms every spring and this year Alice and I went out to photograph the display. I am not sure how this profusion of flowers happened but I suspect they are from the gardens of the houses that had been there. Playing in this field was like a short vacation.

For Photoshopists

Hi gang,

This post is a technique for fixing white balance in Photoshop CS4 or 5 and probably Photoshop Elements. It is very useful for correcting strong color casts as well as tweaking colors. I have found that it helps me understand color balance better. My buddy Al says not to call it a trick or tweak, so I won't.

Steps

1: open image without any correction.

2. create a copy of the background layer.

3. using the rectangular marque tool, choose an area that has what appears to be the most colors or needs the most correction.

4. blur the chosen area using the gaussian blur filter at maximum blur.

5. open the curves adjustment layer.

6. take the grey eye dropper and click on the blurred area.

7. unlock the mask from the curves layer and delete the mask.

8. delete the background copy layer.

9. the final result should be very close to correct.

10. use the red, green or blue channels in the curves dialogue box to fine tune colors if needed.

11. use the default curve (RGB) to adjust final luminance.

This will take longer to read than do.

If you are reasonably familiar with Photoshop CS 4 or 5 or Elementsxx you can figure out the steps by following my instructions and looking at the History Palette above. The last image is of the adjusted image. A significant green color cast has been fixed.

Brooklyn Botanical Garden

One of my favorite spots is the Conservatory at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. The lushness and humidity creates interesting opportunities. The foggy image is from condensation on the camera lens after I came in from the cold. The rest of that little series is messing around to see what happens. The other px are more straightforward.

Visit the Brooklyn Botanical Garden when you go to New York. Late spring/early summer is best unless you when there is snow on the ground.

Keowee Chamber Concert, Asheville, NC

Last night we attended the Keowee Chamber Players' concert At the Pack Place Art Museum in Asheville, NC. Kate Steinbeck and her chamber group played a great concert commemorating the horrors of "Krystalnacht" in Germany before WWII in their series Elegywhich is Keowee's Holocaust Remembrance Series presenting music of Bernstein, Kapralova, Bloch and Shostakovich. This year the featured piece is Dmitri Shostakovich's monumental Piano Trio No. 2, Op. 67 which commemorates the death of a friend and Holocoast victims.

My photos are of the concert space and audience. I do not take photographs during a classical concert. I feel uncomfortable disturbing the audience's concentration.

I have not posted for a long time as I mainly use Smugmug http://shutterfinger.smugmug.com/ for posting photographs (my main passion).

This post is about audio. I recently acquired a Technics SL 12ooMK2SE direct drive turntable system from KAB Electro-Acoustics http://www.kabusa.com/index_ac.htm ( with a Goldring Elite moving coil cartridge and a few upgrades. Why do I post this? Because this turntable (which includes an excellent arm) has bested a number of turntables I have owned or heard costing 2-5 times the cost of a modified Technics turntable with an excellent cartridge. I am glad I never got rid of my LP collection. Records have always sounded better than CD's to me. This turntable extracts that last bit of detail and air which truly approximates the live experience. My wife and friends have noticed this immediately.

If you read reviews of this rig you will see a variety of opinions from great unit to DJ junk. I am not sure what DJ junk really means since they work their equipment very hard for a living.

Besides reproducing the sound on record beautifully, it totally solves the problem of footfalls bouncing the tone arm. This problem is almost ubiquitous in my den except with this table and an older SOTA suspended table.

It seems to me that the direct drive, structurally well damped approach Technics uses provides the best large window on the music while still isolating the arm from forces that would cause it to bounce.

Another joy of this unit is the ease of arm setup. Those of you who play with these things know exactly what I mean.

If you are seeking a new turntable, this system is very much worth your investigation.

I just finished reading Dr. Oliver Sachs's book Musicophilia. He describes and presents explanations of the effects of the music on people with various forms of brain damage and/or congenital disorders. He expands on how helpful music therapy can be for folks with motion disorders like Parkinsonism, stuttering, etc. He also goes into the issue of folks with no ability to appreciated music emotionally. The brain pathways are described as best one knows them that correspond to the things described. I found the plasticity and ability to repair itself via music therapy most positive. So keep listening (and maybe learning to play music).

I recently got back from a trip to Virginia and posted the images on my SmugMug blog. You probably have seen them. I recently went back to a Utah Elderhostel set of photographs which I found interesting. Finally, as some of you might remember, I reported on a new preamp from Bent Audio. This has been an ongoing pleasure. Most new audio gear sort of becomes less enlightening as time goes by. I think when the combination of equipment is right the music always comes through and the equipment sort of fade into the background. Next time I will list some of my favorite recordings.

Atlanta Aquarium-A Magical Garden of Fish

The Atlanta Botanical Garden was treasure one of our trip. Treasure two was the Georgia Aquarium. It is an underwater treasure. The total experience reminds me of the Beatle's song about the octopus's garden.

Listening

It is time for a listening post for those who dig such. I am not generally a fan of giant collections but the reissue on CD of the Complete Haydn Symphonies conducted by Antal Dorati is worth the $70 it costs. The recordings are good so far. I have listened to the first 3 disks including symphonies 1-12. This has been done over a few evenings. The music is extremely interesting as it is full of surprises in structure and rhythm. The sound is rich, spacious and makes make want to go hear the symphonies in a live concert.

The set is Decca 478 1221 and has 33 CD's. All that music for less than dinner for two at a decent restaurant and a movie.

Atlanta Botanical Garden

I just finished weaving what seems like a football field of yardage (?16 yards, OK, so it's not a football field). My mentoress tells me the weaving looks good and it will become a bunch of dish cloths, etc. Alice has put a new warp on the loom and so I will be more or less kept out of trouble for a few yards.

The deal has stayed the same, Alice warps and I shop and clean.

A Day at the Movie

Finished the Warp

A close friend (http://www.weaverly.typepad.com/)posted that she just finished a warp and cut off the the weaving. I just finished a warp which will probably make a bizzilion wash cloths. The close friend designs the weavings I do and warps my loom.

Weaving is interesting in that it is truly Zen. There is just you, the warp, the shuttle and the loom. Like life, it requires close attention to detail, works fine until you stop concentrating and is very difficult to correct a mistake due to inattention. Finally, you get a product that you can be proud of and love.

Reedy River Park, Greenville

Yesterday we went to Dupont Forest in North Carolina and hiked (or rather strolled) to Hooker Falls. Again, we don't have to travel far to find neat stuff. The mountain laurels were in perfect bloom. It is nice to arrive at the right time.

A New Audio Experience

I recently bought a new preamp from a company called Bent Audio. It is a very simple device which uses transformer based volume and balance controls. These are early observations. The design is significantly better than any I have owned in the past. The inputs and outputs are staggered and therefore easy to access with the cables. The remote control is perfect with no tendency to over and undershoot the desired volume settings. The balance control also is great. So how does it sound? It has no sound of its own so one hears appropriate clarity with a great sense of the space in which recordings are made. The sound very accurately presents the instruments and voices in the recording. If you are curious, check out their website. The boss man, John Chapman is very accommodating and has designed and built a great product.

Last week week went to Brattonsville to photograph the new magnolias. The details of the flowers led me to look at some of the details of the old farm which is part of Brattonsville. Brattonsville is worth multiple visits for its beauty and historical relevance.

South Carolina Botanical Garden

The South Carolina Botanical Garden at Clemson is another great place to photograph flowers. These were taken on a rainy, foggy day which adds an atmospheric component to the images. The rain drops on some of the flowers and leaves as well as the increased saturation of colors makes for more interesting flower pictures.

The last few days I have been staying home and making very local pictures, like in my house and yard. The pot was part of general cleanup and the roses are the new bloom. While I like to travel, I do not need to go far to find shootables.

Today I started my "finger exercises" by looking at a few flower pictures and wondered about moving in on them with several different crops. This turned out interesting and I tried it on a few other images. You give up some sharpness and other photographic desiderata like ultimate sharpness, best internal contrast, etc. What I got were studies in shape and color and a certain sense of voluptuousness.

Monterrey Revisited (Again)

The Monterrey Classics still pull me back to the set of px I shot there in 2006. This group of images encapsulates the experience for me; old, beautiful cars and attractive women. Who could ask for more?

On the music side we went to hear the Furman Music Department's presentation of Te Deums by Handel, Haydn and Bruckner, a totally exciting experience.

The sound was forward with intense reproduction of leading edges of transients, missing much of the harmonic envelope and cutting off the trailing edges of sound. This makes for a cold, mechanical sound unlike live music. However, the bass was great and synthesized surround was quite realistic. Given that there should be full adjustability, the flaws can probably dealt with and gotten rid of.

I try to work on pictures every day and have found some interesting tools in Photoshop CS4 (and Bridge). These are local adjustment tools when an image is opened as a RAW file. These are located in a row on the top left of the workspace. Check out the Adjustment Brush. If you get a bit lost go to the Help part of the menu bar.
